UST archivist named one of Manila’s Arts and Culture awardees


In celebration of the 442nd Foundation Day of the City of Manila, Prof. Regalado Trota José, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) archivist, was awarded Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan on June 21, 2013 at the Bulwagan Gat. Antonio Villegas in the Manila City Hall.

José was named Patnubay in the category Panitikan at Kasaysayan for his expertise in Philippine bibliography and Philippine Sacred Art and Architecture. He received a certificate and was presented by former City Mayor of Manila, Alfredo S. Lim and Commission Head, Gemma Cruz-Araneta with a golden laurel wreath during the Putungan rites.

In 1999, José was also recognized by the Cultural Center of the Philippines. He was the youngest among the “100 outstanding Filipinos who have helped build the Filipino nation through art and culture during the last 100 years.” He also authored books on Catholic religious art and architecture including Images of Faith, Power + Faith + Image (with Ramon Villegas), and 1992 National Book Award winner (Art Category) Simbahan: Church Art in Colonial Philippines, 1565-1898.

Aside from being the UST archivist, José is currently the head of the National Commission on Arts and Culture’s National Committee on Archives.

Other recipients of the 2013 Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan were Jonas Roces (Eskultura), Guy Custodio (Sining Biswal), Jun Cruz Reyes (Panitikan), Leonilo Doloricon (Pintura), Regina Paz Lopez (Gawad Gatpuno A. Villegas), and Luciano Veloso (Diwa ng Lahi).
