UST holds traveling exhibit to honor Nelson Mandela

The University of Santo Tomas (UST) is currently holding a rolling exhibit from July 31 to August 2 at the Tan Yan Kee Student Center lobby in honor of 1993 Nobel Peace Prize recipient and former South African president Nelson Mandela.

The event is in partnership with the United Nations Information Center, Manila and the Embassy of South Africa.

The exhibit, which has for its theme “Take action, Inspire change”, is in line with the Nelson Mandela International Day celebrated every July 18, through the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly.

During the exhibit, students are encouraged to pledge 67 minutes of public service to honor Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of service to humanity.

On August 2, Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, O.P., rector of UST and Amb. Agnes Nyamande-Pitso of the South African Embassy will grace the event, which will be attended by the Thomasian Community together with South African students of the University.

Nelson Mandela is the first black South African to hold the office of presidency from 1994 to 1999 in South Africa. He gained international recognition for his contribution to the culture of peace and freedom.

Besides
being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, he was also granted the US Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Soviet Order of Lenin among others. Mandela also did charitable work by establishing the Nelson Mandela Foundation, which combats poverty and HIV/AIDS.
