UA&P opens School of Law & Governance

The University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) has announced the conversion of its Institute of Political Economy into a School of Law and Governance.

This was announced by Dr. Jose Maria Mariano, President of UA&P.

The new school will assume oversight over existing UA&P courses leading to Bachelors and Masters degrees in Political Economy. Starting June 2014, it will begin offering a Juris Doctor (JD) or law program following a straight 7-year track for high school graduates, and a 4-year track for college graduates.

According to Dr. Mariano, the 7-year JD program is the latest among UA&P’s educational innovations. UA&P is the first Philippine university to offer 5-year masters programs. A high school graduate who enrols in UA&P can obtain a masters degree in 5 years in either economics, integrated marketing communication, management, education or political economy.

High school graduates who complete UA&P’s 7-year JD program will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Juris Doctor degree.

Dr. Mariano said that all the programs in UA&P’s School of Law and Governance adopt an interdisciplinary approach, where faculty and students cultivate “an open attitude to knowledge and perspectives from political science, economics, history, sociology, public administration and philosophy.”

“The approach enables students of law and governance to become cultured and ethical, familiar with public and private sector mindsets, and culturally sensitive, capable of understanding peoples, cultures and legal systems from a regional and global point of view,” Dr. Mariano said. “With the economic integration of the 10 ASEAN countries in 2015, UA&P’s programs will seek to equip its students with tools to prepare them for professional practice in the region”, Dr. Mariano added.

Competitive exams for admission into UA&P’s Juris Doctor program are scheduled on December 7, 2013, 1-5:30 pm, and on February 22, 2014, 1-5:30 pm in Ortigas, Pasig City, and in the cities of Cebu and Davao. Interested parties may contact the UA&P School of Law and Governance by email at slg@uap.asia or call tel. 637-0912 (loc. 368 or 323). Or visit slg.uap.asia.
