United Nations Singers to perform in Manila

The United Nations Staff Recreation Council Singers or United Nations Singers, a group almost as old as the UN itself, will be performing for the first time in the Philippines with a gala night concert on 26 February 2014 at St. Cecilia’s Hall, St. Scholastica’s College, Malate, Manila.

This distinguished group composed of present and former staff of the UN in New York and affiliated organizations has traveled and performed in the United States, Canada and in many countries of South America, Europe, the Caribbean and Asia. Its repertoire includes folk songs, carols, and choral music in more than 50 languages.

The Singers, who are acting as unofficial UN goodwill ambassadors, are often called to perform at cultural festivals, at nursing homes, orphanages, and official events attended by the UN Secretary-General and other top UN officials in New York City and in many other places.

With their journey of hope to “spread harmony and understanding through the universal language of music”, the Singers will embark on a hectic schedule while in Manila where they will perform in SM Megamall, SM Aura, as well as two other malls in the Metro.

They will also have a mini-concert at the Ramon Magsaysay High School in Manila and the De La Salle Zobel High School in Alabang. Down south they will give a short performance at the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP) and a concert at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Santo Cristo de Burgos Parish, Sariaya Quezon. To end their Philippine tour, they will visit the Philippine General Hospital and serenade cancer patients before they depart for New York.

The UN Singers Philippine Visit is being endorsed by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) with the special participation of the Madrigal Singers.

UN Singers Philippine Visit 2014 chairperson Isolda Oca worked tirelessly to make sure that their visit would help uplift the spirits of a country that has been battered by so many natural disasters in the last few months. The planning committee, composed of the United Nations Information Center Manila (UNIC), the Department of Tourism, the Department of Education, the Association of Former International Civil Service (AFICS) and Soprano Alto Tenor Bass (SATB) has been working since February 2013 to ensure the success of the endeavor.

The proceeds of the concert will go to the St. Scholastica’s Mission Hospital in Pambujan, Northern Samar and to those who were greatly affected by Typhoon Yolanda in Tacloban and Ormoc. For tickets, call Jesa Ann Consolacion at 336-7722.
