DLSU College of Law brings legal mission to Tacloban

TACLOBAN CITY — The De La Salle University College of Law (DLSU COL) embarked on a legal aid mission last January in Tacloban City in an effort to help  citizens and the city’s Regional Trial Court. A contingent of law students, paralegals, and members of the University Student government, together with DLSU COL Dean, Atty. Jose Manuel Diokno, went to areas gravely affected by super typhoon Haiyan to dispense legal aid.

DLSU COL collaborated with Initiatives for Dialogue and Empowerment through Alternative Legal Services (IDEALS Inc.) for the legal aid mission. The mission provided assistance to families and individuals in their legal claims for social protection and other types of insurance. They were also assisted in accessing benefits afforded to those who are still suffering from the effects of the typhoon. In addition to this, DLSU COL donated office supplies plus ten computer units and two printers from the university to help jumpstart Tacloban City's Regional Trial Court. The legal aid mission had pilot barangays in San Joaquin, Palo and in areas of Abuyog and Baybay in Leyte.

DLSU College of Law is slated to return to Tacloban this April. The students are currently working on informational material that aims to educate people on the basic benefits they could claim from the government.
