CHED to shed light on IP policies for HEIs
“Who should receive the patent for an invention? The faculty or the university?” “Who owns the copyright to a work? The adviser or the student?” “Can the university claim the work of its faculty?” “Should the school receive a share from royalties of works produced by its teacher?” These are some of the questions that can be answered in an intellectual property (IP) policy.
Senior officers of higher educational institutions (HEIs) will receive valuable insights on the crafting of IP policies mandated by Republic Act 10372 at the “Copy & Repro,” a special event happening at the 35th Manila book fair on September 19.
Commission on Higher Education (CHED) director Dr. Napoleon K. Juanillo Jr. will speak on the “Implications of Mandatory IP Policies for Schools and Universities under RA 10372.” Dr. Juanillo is director of CHED’s Office of Planning, Research, and Knowledge Management.
Local speakers Intellectual Property Office (IP Philippines) director general Ricardo R. Blancaflor will deliver the keynote address, “Keeping the Philippines Off the USTR’s Watch List” and Ateneo de Manila Law School dean Sedfrey M. Candelaria will discuss Fair Use.
International speakers are Australia’s Copyright Agency Viscopy CEO Jim Alexander, New Zealand’s Copyright Council chair Paula Browning, Copyright Licensing and Administration Society of Singapore CEO Paul Wee, and US’ Copyright Clearance Center executive director Michael Healy.
“Copy & Repro” is the first international conference that will tackle fair use, book piracy, and the mandatory crafting of IP policies for schools and universities. The special event will take place at the Function Room 2, SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City.
“Copy & Repro” is organized by the Filipinas Copyright Licensing Society (FILCOLS) in partnership with the Book Development Association of the Philippines (BDAP), IP Philippines, the National Book Development Board (NBDB), and the Brussels-based International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organizations (IFRRO).
Prospective participants are requested to register early because of limited slots. Deadline for registration is extended until September 12, 2014.
Conference fees cover morning and afternoon snacks, lunch, certificate of participation, and conference kit. Regular rate is P1,500.00. Discounted rate is P1,200.00 for SUCs and for groups of three or more participants from the same institution.
