US embassy pitches in to help restore San Sebastian Church

On February 4, U.S. Ambassador Philip S. Goldberg visited San Sebastian Church in Quiapo, Manila for an event hosted by the U.S. Embassy in Manila and the San Sebastian Foundation which showcased the results of a comprehensive and state-of-the-art diagnostic survey done on San Sebastian Church.

A P4.3 million (US$97,000) grant by the Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) to San Sebastian Foundation funded the survey of the church as the first phase in a ten-year project to restore its unique structure.

The event showcased the completed diagnostic phase of this ambitious restoration project and brought attention to the need for strong support from the cultural preservation community in the Philippines to achieve the remaining work under the project.

The event highlighted the previous cultural preservation projects in the Philippines supported by the AFCP which includes the restoration work of the early 18th Century La Immaculada Conception Church in Easter Samar through the National Museum of the Philippines, and the documentation of the oral traditions of Ifugao through the National Commission for Culture and Arts. — US Embassy news release
