1,533 shelters turned over by Australia to Yolanda-affected families

Australian Ambassador Bill Tweddell poses with beneficiaries along a GK village street named after his Australian hometown, when he visited the Typhoon Yolanda shelter recovery site of Gawad Kalinga (GK) in Palo, Leyte, to officially handover 250 units of new row houses constructed in lots donated to GK for families whose houses were totally destroyed and who do not have lands.

The streets in the community are named after Australian cities.

The Australian support through GK included building materials, as well as livelihood and community facilities and programs.

Almost 8,000 individuals or 1,533 families are benefiting from housing formally handed over on 28 July 2015 by the Australian Government as part of its broad assistance to communities affected by Typhoon Yolanda.

The P120 million Australian funding for shelter rehabilitation and construction was implemented through projects by Catholic Relief Services Philippines, Gawad Kalinga, and the Philippine Red Cross, in coordination with the Palo Municipality, Tacloban City and the beneficiary host communities.
