1,600 San Miguel, Catanduanes residents get aid from GMA Foundation

More than 1,600 residents of San Miguel, Catanduanes who were affected by the onslaught of Super Typhoon Rolly and Typhoon Ulysses received assistance from GMA Kapuso Foundation on Wednesday.

According to a report on “24 Oras,” relief packs, bottled water, and hygiene kits were given to residents of Barangays Obo, Santa Elena, and Salvacion.

“Malaking pasasalamat. Kung wala ‘yun, wala kaming pang tawid gutom. GMA lang po ang nauna,” Gilmark Sonio Tindugan, a boatman, said.

Tindugan turned to ferrying individuals across a river for livelihood after a spillway in the area was destroyed during the onslaught of the typhoons.

“Nasira po ng baha pag bagyo. Nag crack po ‘yung sementong dinadaanan kaya hindi makatawid ‘yung mga sasakyan. Kasi po wala nang ibang trabaho eh,” Tindugan said.

He said their abaca plantations - where he used to earn a living from - have since been destroyed by the recent typhoons.

“Ayun lang ang kinukuhanan namin ng hanap buhay. Tsaka pag walang abaca, magugutom kami,” Tindugan said.
