Knorr Nutri-Sarap Nutrition program to empower mothers
to create nutritious and delicious meals.

Unilever Philippines begins a landmark partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development – Calabarzon to roll out the Knorr Nutri-Sarap Nutrition Program in the region.

Consistent with its drive for nutritious and delicious food that is accessible to all, Knorr Philippines recognizes that it plays a key role in shaping food consumption habits that are good for the Filipinos and for the environment.

The pandemic has profound implications on food security and access, and consequently impacts the health and nutrition of the most vulnerable sectors. Malnutrition continues to be a nationwide threat to health and well-being.

Challenges to a Healthy Filipino household

The Department of Science and Technology - Food and Nutrition Research Institute conducted a Rapid Nutrition Assessment Survey1  in 2020 to examine the nutrition and food security situation in the country amid the pandemic.

The results reflected that six out of 10 or 62.1% of surveyed households reported ‘moderate to severe’ food insecurity, and that this is highest in households with children and with pregnant members.

Ensuring proper nutrition is paramount for families and the institutions mandated to uphold welfare but this is especially crucial now as we make every effort to boost immunity to avoid contracting COVID-19 and other diseases.

Even before the pandemic, it has been reported that one in every two children below five years old experience undernutrition at the peak of their development where the effects may be permanent, irreversible, or even fatal.

The two main drivers of malnutrition prevalence are lack of education on proper nutrition, and limited budget to prepare nutritious meals. As a result, lower-income families resort to cheaper food alternatives which often do not provide adequate nutrition.

For almost two decades, the Knorr Nutri-Sarap Nutrition Program has been championing to provide every Filipino good nutrition and access to food and has made an impact on the lives of 1.5 million Filipino children who were previously undernourished.

Modules under the program are designed to aid mothers as they introduce healthy and sustainable choices for their families through nutritious, delicious, and affordable home-cooked meals.

The program aims to educate families on nutritious eating and cooking with a 21-day nutrition plan to start building healthy habits. This also provides a clear path on how Knorr can continue to empower communities to improve their health, while ensuring the sustainability of our food resources.

Unilever recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement with DWSD Calabarzon to bring the Knorr Nutri-Sarap Nutrition Program to the region. The partnership was sealed through a virtual signing attended by key partners led by DSWD Regional Director, Mr. Marcelo Castillo, and DSWD Pantawid Program head, Ms. Nellibeth Mercado. Unilever and DSWD envision to help over 200,000 children in the region through this program.

“Knorr Nutri-Sarap Nutrition Program simplifies meal planning and preparation and empowers our community moms to make healthier choices for their family. Sama-sama, tulong-tulong, gawin nating Nutri-Sarap ang pagkain ng bawat pamilyang Pilipino para sa malusog na bukas,” said Bindoy Baltazar, Marketing Director for Foods of Unilever Philippines.

Unilever will prepare and provide learning modules, conduct home-based 21-day training program using the nutri-journal, and offer access to nutrition experts. DSWD, in turn, will bridge Unilever with the Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries in the region, as well as extend guidance and assistance as necessary for the success of the program.

“Aligned with Unilever’s new Compass Strategy, we believe the Knorr Nutri-Sarap Nutrition Program can help address the area of positive nutrition to help people, especially our vulnerable populations, transition to healthier diets, shared Ed Sunico, VP Communication of SEA.
