Philippine Historical Association conference to highlight Filipino humanity
Philippine Historical Association (PHA) President Dr. Ma. Luisa Camagay and the board of trustees are inviting historians, researchers, history/social science educators and the interested public to the 2021 Annual Conference of the PHA with the theme “Bayanihan at Pakikipagkapwa-Tao: Empathy, Resilience, and Humanity in Philippine History” on October 28-30, 2021.
For this event, the PHA partnered with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Philippine Social Science Council (PSSC), and Brilliant Creations Publishing. The conference is also a commitment to the Local Historical Committees Network and still in solidarity with 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines (2021 QCP). This is the second PHA Conference that will be held completely online.
According to PHA Vice President Dr. Wensley Reyes, the Conference Convenor, “The COVID-19 pandemic reopened our eyes to the various aspects of human society in the Philippines. Despite having enormous challenges in addressing disease control and health management brought about by different factors, the pandemic showcased Filipino empathy, resilience, and humanity.”
That empathy and humanity was what our ancestors exemplified 500 years ago when they fed the hungry, thirsty, and dying members of the Magellan Expedition when they arrived in the islands in 1521. Thus, it is the objective of the conference to provide a venue to highlight these narratives, underscoring the theme of the Quincentennial Commemorations, “Victory and Humanity.”

The keynote address will be delivered by Hon. Tonisito M.C. Umali, Esq., Undersecretary for Legislative Affairs, External Partnerships and Project Management Service Department of Education.
Among the plenary speakers will be Dr. Ricardo T. Jose of the University of the Philippines Department of History to talk about “Filipino Heroism during Difficult Times,” Dr. Lars Raymund Ubaldo of the De La Salle University Department of History on the “Cultural Foundations of Bayanihan at Pakikipagkapwa-Tao,” and Mr. Ian Christopher Alfonso of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines speaking about “Exemplars of Bayanihan at Pakikipagkapwa-Tao in Philippine History.”
Once again, in this time of the pandemic, the PHA and its partners decided to open this three-day conference free to the public as a form of service to our nation via Facebook Live at the Philippine Historical Association (PHA), National Quincentennial Committee (NQC), National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), Local Historical Committees Network (LHCN) and the Department of Education (DepEd) Facebook pages.
