Golez seeks House probe on mass media attack

Former national security adviser Rep. Roilo Golez (2D, Parañaque) on Monday called for an investigation at the House of Representatives into the alleged attacks on press freedom during the week-long emergency rule. Golez filed a resolution calling for the House inquiry and at the same time urging his colleagues to condemn the acts of the Philippine National Police (PNP) against the media in pursuit of the implementing guidelines of Proclamation 1017. He said restrictions on press freedom have no space in a democratic society, GMA 7's DZBB reported Monday. The congressmen cited the raid on the offices and printing press of the Daily Tribune and the deployment of police officers to monitor news articles to be printed by the newspaper. He pointed to the threats of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) that any radio or television company airing anti-government sentiments would be cut off the air. Golez said PNP chief Director Gen. Arturo Lomibao should be asked to appear before the House to explain the police's "abuses."-GMANews.TV
