New Facebook worm found in the wild

A new worm exploiting social networking giant Facebook is now in the wild, using stolen credentials to log into Facebook accounts then spam contacts.

Sunbelt/GFI Labs said Danish security company CSIS spotted the worm spreading on the social networking site.

"The message is said to contain a link to a file purporting to be (a JPG) image ... but it's actually a malicious screensaver. Once run, it drops a cocktail of malicious files onto the system, including ZeuS, a popular Trojan spyware capable of stealing user information from infected systems," it said in a blog post.

It added the worm is also found to have anti-VM (virtual machine) capabilities, making it useless to execute and test in a virtual environment such as Oracle VM VirtualBox and VMWare.

With the threat, Sunbelt/GFI Labs reminded computer users to secure their information, including their social network credentials.

"Never unknowingly click links on messages sent over by online contacts. Make sure that they did send messages to you first before doing something; else, it is best if you simply delete them from your message inbox," it added. — TJD, GMA News
