YouTube sensation Mikey Bustos is WikiPinoy of the Year
Readers of Philippine-oriented online encyclopedia WikiPilipinas.org voted for YouTube sensation Mikey Bustos as the "WikiPinoy of the Year" for 2011.
WikiPilipinas said Bustos, known for his satirical “Filipino tutorials” on YouTube, got the support of more than 50 percent of voters in the official poll.
“Higit sa pagbibigay-saya sa Global Pinoy, si Bustos ay nagbigay ng makabuluhang impormasyon para sa pandaigdigang netizen hinggil sa kulturang Pinoy at pagiging 'epic' ng lahing Pinoy. Gamit ang makabagong midya, kaniyang pinaningas ang Pinoy pride saan mang sulok ng daigdig sa paraang hip 'n free (Aside from entertaining the Global Pinoy, Bustos has also told the world about the 'epic' Filipino culture using new media),” WikiPilipinas project editor Merck Maguddayao said of Bustos on WikiPilipinas' yearend portal, The Past 10s.
Bustos thanked WikiPilipinas for the honor.
“Wow! Maraming salamat, Wikipilipinas.org, for nominating me and for the great honour of being the WikiPinoy of the year! I will continue to do my part to make Pilipinas proud! Mabuhay!” Bustos said on his Facebook fan page.
Slain anti-mining advocate Gerardo Ortega, who was shot dead in Palawan on Jan. 24 last year, placed second in the poll.
Commission on Audit commissioner and whistleblower Heidi Mendoza placed third in the poll, WikiPilipinas said.
WikiPilipinas gives out the WikiPinoy of the Year award to individuals or groups who made the most significant contribution in the free and open sharing of knowledge and information.
Past winners of the award included investigative journalist Malou Mangahas, presidential communications group undersecretary Manuel Quezon III, and Filipino bloggers.
