Instagram opens registration for Android app

Instagram, the popular photo-sharing service that first caught fire on the iOS, has opened up registration for its Android app.   The registration provides Android device owners the chance to be first in line to get the Instagram app, tech site The Next Web reported.   "Upon registering, Instagram says it will be in touch ‘soon’. Just how soon remains to be seen but at least there’s a UI!," The Next Web said.   Prospective users need nothing more than a single form where they can enter their email addresses. The Next Web speculated this could entitle early registrants to a beta release.   The app is expected to ultimately surface on Google Play, Amazon’s Appstore and other Google-centric marketplaces.   Instagram was a big hit on devices running Apple's iOS, with 27 million users.   But Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom said they are working on an Android version of the app which he says will see the company “address an entirely new market” and see its audience double.   An earlier article on TechCrunch had said Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom noted the Android app is "in some ways" better than the iOS app.   Systrom added it took a while for Instagram to come to Android simply because the company was focused on scaling on iOS.   Co-founder Mike Krieger added the "folks over at Android" have been pretty impressed with the way the app leverages the platform.   Systrom did not disclose daily active users during his fireside chat with TechCrunch editor Alexia Tsotsis. “It’s Facebook-level engagement that we’re seeing,” he said.   Instagram was launched in the fall of 2010, and grew out of some unsuccessful experiments in location sharing. - AMD, GMA News
