Facebook acquires location-based app Glancee

Facebook has acquired Glancee, one of the location-aware apps that allows users to discover the hidden connections around them and to meet interesting people.

Glancee, which said it seeks to empower serendipity and pioneer social discovery, made the announcement on its website.

"We are therefore very excited to announce that Facebook has acquired Glancee and that we have joined the team in Menlo Park to build great products for over 900 million Facebook users. We've had such a blast connecting people through Glancee, and we truly thank our users for being a part of the Glancee community," it said.

Glancee started in 2010 with the goal of bringing together "the best of your physical and digital worlds."

Tech site The Next Web said the service may be shut down, as the team offers users a way to download your data from the site.

But it noted that as the product "never really took off," the Glancee team may be joining Facebook to work on other products that rely on location.

"Perhaps it can help the social network come up with technology that doesn’t drain your battery when you use a location app like Glancee," it said.

The Next Web noted Facebook has been busy this year, adding yet another hungry startup to the ranks of the company.

Along with Glancee, Facebook has acquired Instagram and Gowalla in recent months, it said. — RSJ, GMA News
