New Miley Cyrus 'sex tape' scam circulating on Facebook

Facebook users were warned over the weekend against a new scam using a supposed sex tape of actress-singer Miley Cyrus as bait.

The scam is disguised as a breaking news item about the alleged sex tape supposedly having been seen by millions of men, according to a post on HotforSecurity.com.

"By clicking the image, users are taken to a web page where the video appears to be hosted. When trying to play the clip, users are requested to first prove that they are not underage," Ioana Jelea said in a HotforSecurity.com blog post.

Citing technical information from BitDefender online threats analyst Steliana Goga, Jelea said Facebook users who fall for the scam and click will fall prey to the “copy/paste code” method that lets the scammer steal the victim’s Facebook authentication token.

With the victim's token, the scammer can temporarily gain access to the victim's Facebook account - including his or her list of friends, Jelea said.

"The stolen authentication tokens are put to excellent use and the scam circle can go round and round," Jelea added.

As for the victim, he or she will get duped several times over, after he or she ends up in a "quiz maze" - while the post about the supposed sex tape will appear on his or her Timeline, with all his or her friends being tagged. — RSJ, GMA News
