Twitter, other big names embracing Windows 8 with apps

Little by little, the big names are coming out to embrace Windows 8, Microsoft's newly-launched flagship operating system.

 

Microblogging service Twitter on Tuesday night (Manila time) said it is building an app for Windows 8, which it said needs a "great" app.

 

"Windows 8 needs a great Twitter app. So we’re building it. Looking forward to sharing it with you in the months ahead," it said.

A separate report on tech site Mashable said many other big names such as ESPN, Dropbox and Lego have also announced apps for Windows 8.

 

Mashable said ESPN senior VP of mobile Michael Bayle appeared at Microsoft’s Build developer conference to debut the network's new app.

 

“Windows 8 has given us a chance to re-imagine the user experience. The app for Windows 8 will put all our content into one application. It also takes full advantage of Windows 8 functionality — snap view, semantic zoom and live tile. Without collaboration with Microsoft we could not have done this,” Mashable quoted him as saying.

 

The ESPN app will aggregate news in a horizontal scroll, and will let users pin favorite teams as live tiles, like Microsoft’s own sports news app.

 

For its part, cloud storage site Dropbox said it will roll out a Windows 8 app “soon.”

 

On the other hand, Mashable said the Lego Group plans to deliver the existing game Lego Life of George but that the title would include “new unique features” on Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.

 

Mashable said PayPal did not commit to an app, but has a Windows 8 API that lets developers integrate the PayPal payment system into Windows 8 apps. — TJD, GMA News
