Facebook users warned vs 'unsealed' product offers
Facebook users were warned Monday against falling for a scam that claims to give away well-known products that could no longer be sold because they had been "unsealed."
The warning was posted on WafflesAtNoon.com, a blog site that discusses Internet-based rumors, hoaxes and scams.
"What we’re seeing currently is a Facebook page that begins a slew of activity, posts a photo of a well-known product, and claims to be giving away a large quantity of them because they are unsealed and thus cannot be sold. These promotions cannot be found on official company websites or Facebook pages because they are fake," the site said.
It said these scams offer popular products such as Beats by Dre, though the Facebook page offering this was eventually shut down.
WafflesAtNoon.com said its research showed the most likely reason for such fake promotions is to "simply build up a Facebook page with massive amounts of likes."
Such pages are then "sold, renamed, and all traces of their fake promotions are deleted."
A separate article on CNET said another fake promotion offers "Apple tablets on an official looking Facebook page that identifies itself as 'Apple' and includes a banner with images of Apple products." — TJD, GMA News
