YouTube bug drops support for IE8 and IE10 browsers

An apparent bug may be causing video-sharing site YouTube to flag more recent versions of Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser as "no longer supported," a tech site reported Tuesday (Manila time).

YouTube has been flagging IE 8 on Windows XP and IE 10 on Windows 7 - the latest versions for the two operating systems respectively, The Next Web reported.

"We’ve tested this issue out on a few Windows machines and it appears that other versions of the browser that should be supported aren’t affected. Windows 8 users with IE10 can access YouTube just fine, as can IE9 users," it added.

But those running the affected versions of IE may see the message, “Your browser is deprecated, please upgrade,” it added.

It pointed out YouTube stopped supporting IE6 as early as March 2010, then did the same for IE7, Firefox 3.5, and Safari 3 in August 2011.

On the other hand, The Next Web said users of IE versions 6 and 7 will get the error message, "Oops, your web browser is no longer supported."

For now, The Next Web said one can remedy the problem by just clicking the blue “No thanks” button or going to YouTube.com again.

IE8 next?

While The Next Web said IE8 may be the next to stop getting YouTube support, it may not be dismissed so easily, as it is the latest IE version Windows XP will get.

But it also pointed out the entire problem may have been due to a bug as it also affects a newer version, IE10 on Windows 7.

"If this were just IE8, we could potentially see this as a legitimate message, especially since it can be bypassed. Given that it shows up on IE10 on Windows 7, but not IE10 on Windows 8, we’re pretty certain this is a bug," it said.— TJD, GMA News
