Cybercrooks add new twist to 'Facebook profile viewer' scam
Cybercrooks are giving a new twist to a scam targeting users of social networking site Facebook by promising them a nonexistent "profile viewer" app. Security vendor Trend Micro said the scammers are spreading spam mail claiming members can see who is stalking them by typing in commands on their keyboard – like Ctrl+FB. "Once you click the link on the comment box, it will redirect again to Facebook Log in Page with Pinterest. Once logged in, the site redirects to another malicious URL that claims to be 'Official Facebook Profile Viewer.' Clicking the ‘Get Started’ button redirects to image with keyboard shortcuts with instructions for users to carry out," it said in a blog post. Users are redirected to another page asking to type in another set of keyboard shortcuts for the supposed security check, it said. But as in the past, the chain ultimately leads to a malicious survey scam. Trend Micro said the survey scam had also promised other tech goodies such as Google Glass, Instagram, and Tumblr. "Sadly, users still fall for this. To avoid this threat, always remember that threats are just lurking on social networking sites and always be cautious when clicking links, even if they come from your contacts," it advised. "And let me be clear – a legitimate Facebook Profile Viewer doesn’t exist. For now, anyway," it added. — LBG, GMA News
