DFA finally opens Facebook page to reach out to global PInoys

After more than a billion people got there first, the Department of Foreign Affairs this week has opened its own page on social networking site Facebook.

Visitors who log in to the page can access the department's articles, news releases and photos, similar to those posted on the DFA website.

“We acknowledge that the social media is a powerful communication tool and through Facebook we hope to build stronger relationships with Facebook users and fans and encourage more people to become fans through interactions,” DFA Spokesperson Raul Hernandez said.

With the new Facebook page, the department also seeks to engage a wider audience using a "trusted and highly popular social networking service such as Facebook."

The Facebook page so far shows not only activities of Philippine embassies around the world, and the perfunctory group photos with Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario. It also features snapshots of official visitors to the Philippines such as Brunei peacekeepers in Mindanao and Filipinos travelling overseas representing the country, such as the women's national football team, the Malditas, competing in Bangladesh.

Philippine foreign policy

Visitors to the Facebook page can get information on Philippine foreign policy, including announcements from the Department, its embassies, consulates and missions, and news, photos and video clips of DFA programs, projects, and activities.

They can also get easy access to vital information such as consular and Assistance to Nationals (ATN) services and public advisories.

“We created it to allow the general public to easily find DFA-related information through a medium that can be easily accessed, wherever they are,” Hernandez said.

Last year, the DFA set up its Twitter account (@dfaspokesperson), which features links to DFA media releases, announcements and other updates.  — ELR/HS, GMA News
