Racist commenter vs Megan Young hit with towering public backlash

Recently, Filipinos rushed to defend Miss World 2013 Megan Young and Filipina womanhood in general from one Devina DeDiva, who made racist comments on Facebook pertaining to Young.

“Miss Philippines is Miss World? What a joke! I did not know those maids have anything else in them, Ha Ha Ha” went her initial comment. She defended this comment with more comments of the same nature—at one point labelling Filipinas “poor,” “smelly from cleaning toilets” and “underprivileged”—when strangers challenged her or her friends pleaded with her to desist.

As if rallying under a war cry, many Filipino netizens reacted in the spirit of fighting fire with fire. At least one Facebook "hate page" has been set up, and some have even gone so far as to hate videos on YouTube:

DeDiva is a shoo-in candidate for “Miss Racism 2013,” according to some.

DeDiva's response

The 26-year-old DeDiva has since deactivated her Facebook page.

DeDiva, allegedly an Indian assistant teacher based in Singapore, was said to have been recently relieved from her post at a school run by Filipino supervisors, according to a tweet from Inquirer Entertainment. The same tweet also stated that she is afraid to go out in the streets.

Anthony Benedicto, a Filipino netizen residing in Singapore, recently filed a sedition charge against Devina with the Singaporean police. DeDiva could be facing a fine of $5,000 or three years in jail or both if found guilty.
