Facebook's 'unfollow' button will give you god-like powers over your news feed

Facebook users tired of following a post they may find boring or offensive may soon have an option to get rid of it, at least from their News Feeds.

The social networking giant is rolling out the "Unfollow" button that will replace "Hide All," according to a report on TechCrunch.

But TechCrunch noted there is not much change from "Hide All" in terms of functionality.

"What is changing is the specific wording. Thanks to services like Twitter and Instagram, users have presumably become more familiar with the concept of unfollowing, and it seems that the language of following and unfollowing is becoming a bigger part of Facebook," it said.

TechCrunch said both "Unfollow" and "Hide All" allows a Facebook user to remain friends with another user, only that another person's post is hidden from one's News Feed stream.

Also, TechCrunch said Facebook will show users if they are following someone.

Following allows a user to receive public updates from someone he or she follows on the social network, without having to be Facebook friends.

TechCrunch quoted a Facebook spokesperson as saying the goal of this change "is to help people curate their News Feed and see more of the content that they care about.” — TJD, GMA News
