Twitter lets users 'share and view' animated gif images

Users of Twitter can now spice up their messages after the microblogging service announced Thursday (PHL time) that it now supports animated GIF images.

"Starting today, you can share and view animated GIFs on http://Twitter.com , Android and iPhone," Twitter's support unit announced shortly after midnight Wednesday.

Tech sites welcomed the new feature, with Mashable calling it a "GIFt" to Twitter users.

Mashable said GIFs, animated images on continuous loop, will now appear on users' timeline with a play button similar to videos.

"You can upload GIFs through the gallery button under the text box in the same way you upload a photo," the tech site said.

GIFs are the first video-type content available to regular users.

For now, Mashable said its tests show Twitter GIF support does not appear to extend to Tweetdeck or tablets. — Joel Locsin/ELR, GMA News
