Samsung makes Steve Jobs eat his words

"No one's going to buy that," Steve Jobs once said of phablets.

Oops.

Apple's new iPhone series, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, seem to contradict the sleek-suited guru's design philosophy, and rival company Samsung Electronics didn't let that change of heart go unnoticed:

According to Forbes, the iPhone 6 Plus "clearly has the 5.7-inch Samsung Galaxy Note 4 in its sights" with its 5.5-inch display.

Samsung's Galaxy Note 4 is a larger phablet than the iPhone 6 Plus, measuring at 6.04 x 3.09 x 0.33-inches, but the latter device is no slouch at 5.44 x 2.64 x 0.27 inches.

Déjà vu

Businessweek noted that Apple's sudden change wasn't the first time the company backtracked on its fearless forecasts: a year after Jobs's death, Apple released a 7.9-inch iPad Mini, something Jobs rallied against in 2010.

He said that seven-inch tablets were "tweeners", and was "too big" to compete with smartphones and "too small" to compete with iPads.

Apple's tweener, however, sold well despite being pre-emptively called "dead on arrival" by the late luminary.

Mac Rumors, an Apple-centric site, also noticed Samsung's ploy, and pointed at the series of new web ads the company released in light of Apple's live stream last Tuesday.

Featuring actors dressed as Apple Geniuses, the lovely ladies and gents manning Apple Stores, the ads poked fun at the troubled special event the tech giant had to introduce their new products.

Some of the six commercials even took potshots at the iPhone-reliant features of the Apple Watch, slated to be released in 2015.  — TJD, GMA News
