Abused Emojis app helps mistreated children express themselves

Children who have been mistreated and could not express their situations in words can now use this emoji set for the iPhone.

The emoji set was created by BRIS, a Swedish non-profit group that runs a help line for children and teenagers.

"Every day we have contact with a great number of kids through phone, chat and mail conversation. Many of the problems that children face today are stigmati(z)ed and often they have no one to talk to but us," it said in the description of the emoji set on the App Store.

It added the Abused Emojis app is "part of our work to let children talk more freely about their situation."

Released May 18, the app is a 4.7-MB download but is rated for children aged 9 and up due to "Infrequent/Mild Cartoon or Fantasy Violence."

The app requires iOS 8.0 or later.

A separate report on The Next Web noted the emojis include general abuse shown by a swollen eye or a band-aid on the face; and alcoholic parents shown by mug of beer or a glass of wine.

"Emoji are not a cure-all for communicating directly, but sometimes when words fail, it might be extremely helpful," it said. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
