How social media can be used to help solve crime

Social media isn’t just a way to keep in touch with loved ones or keep friends updated with what you’re doing, it’s now also a way to help law enforcement catch criminals.

 

Lala Roque reported on State of the Nation With Jessica Soho that it was using social media that the Manila police’s most wanted criminal was caught after 7 years.

 

Jonathan Bassey is wanted for murders committed in 2007 and 2008. Bassey, who was working in Baguio as a painter for construction projects, was caught after a friend posted a picture of himself with Bassey on social media.

 

“Worldwide, they consider social media now as the new tool for crime-solving,” said IT expert Jerry Liao, since social media can help law enforcement gather information.

 

The Philippine National Police said that the public can go to their headquarters if they have useful sensitive information, though they verify any information they receive before they take action. — Bea Montenegro/TJD, GMA News
