Baby dolphin dies after getting passed around for selfies

A baby dolphin died in a beach in Argentina after tourists reportedly scooped it out of the water for selfies.

Pictures of the incident surfaced on Thursday and a video was uploaded, showing the dolphin being taken to the shore and set down on the sand.

On February 11, Facebook user Hernan Coria shared photos of tourists crowding around the dolphin. The ocean-based mammal was lifted up and handled poorly. Soon after, it died of dehydration.

Argentinian animal welfare group Vida Silvestre launched an awareness campaign in response to the incident, informing people of the dwindling numbers of the Franciscana dolphins. With only 30,000 of it in the waters, the species is marked "vulnerable."

Similarly, in 2013, a dolphin that swam to shallow water after being injured by a fishing boat died in the hands of tourist in Hainan, China.

In a video that also went viral, the tourists on the beach can be seen lifting the dolphin out of the water and then passing it along to other people for photos. — APG, GMA News
