Steve Harvey mocks Asian men, earns ire of netizens

“Family Feud” and “Miss Universe 2015” host Steve Harvey has drawn the ire of netizens after a video emerged on YouTube in which he appears to be mocking Asian men.

The YouTube video, uploaded on the Angry Asian Man channel, is a segment of a recent episode of the “Steve Harvey” TV show.

In said episode, Harvey was reviewing a 2002 self-help book entitled “How to Date a White Woman: A Practical Guide for Asian Men.”

He then proceeded to joke that the book consists of only one page, whose content is the question, “Excuse me, do you like Asian men?” and its response, “No. Thank you.”

He followed this up by musing about the contents of a hypothetical book, “How to Date a Black Woman: A Practical Guide (for) Asian Men.”

“Same thing,” Harvey said. “You like Asian men? I don’t even like Chinese food… I don’t eat what I can’t pronounce.”

The YouTube video has been flooded with angry comments.

“Good job on spreading the hate and the stereotype,” said one Rotor Rooster.

“This was so not necessary and downright disrespectful,” remarked IC Henry.

“I really hope this goes viral so he could get as much backlash as possible, forcing him to apologize like his Miss Universe f--k up,” shared Rebecca Johnson. “He could continue to think Asian men are unattractive, but with the emasculation of Asian males still being (accepted) in Western society, him not making a public apology will only give people more of this wrong idea of (the emasculation of) Asian males being acceptable.”

Of course, the self-help book itself did not escape criticism.

“As for the book, (I don’t know) whether to feel disgusted as a white woman or emasculated myself as a black woman (I’m mixed),” Rebecca Johnson continued. “Not only is this fetishizing Caucasians but it’s down-putting for women of color.”

Some people rose to Harvey’s defense, saying he was in fact making fun of the book and its author, not Asian men. A small number blamed “SJWs” for being oversensitive and getting enraged by a couple of jokes (and for contributing to Trump's victory).

Others, of course, could only make fun of Harvey.

“Don’t take it seriously, it’s Steve Harvey,” said Peter Lee. “He can’t even read cue cards correctly.”

This was in reference to Harvey’s infamous Miss Universe 2015 blunder, in which he mistakenly announced Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, as the winner of the beauty pageant. Not long after she received her crown, Harvey confessed he had made a mistake, then revealed that the new Miss Universe was in fact Miss Philippines, Pia Wurtzbach.

Another video uploaded on the Steve Harvey YouTube channel shows the latter portion of the same episode.

In this video, a Filipina is seen giving Harvey advice about Filipino culture. When reminded that he will be hosting Miss Universe 2016 in the Philippines, Harvey jokingly asked, “Is this a nightmare?” — AT, GMA News
