Teacher provides worksheets to over 300 home-bound kids in Iloilo to ensure they keep learning

The threat of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) did not stop an educator in Guimbal, Iloilo from making sure kids in his area continue learning.

Dr. Lodrigo Basco Jr., the MAPEH department head of the Guimbal National High School, has launched a homeschool program called "LODI," or Learning on Distance Initiative, wherein learners are given worksheets to be assisted and guided by their parents or guardians at home.

In an interview with GMA News Online on Wednesday, Dr. Basco said worksheets have been distributed to more than 300 learners in four barangays since April 25, with the help of volunteers.

Guimbal is currently under enhanced community quarantine implemented in several areas as a measure to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

Dr. Basco has been using personal expenses and his own resources at home to provide the initial batch of worksheets, which were compiled using free available sources online.

But to continue the initiative, they need financial support for the reproduction of worksheets and school supplies.

The ongoing program also needs volunteers to continue monitoring the progress of the learners.

“I’m calling for volunteers (teachers or non teachers) and support from the community on this literacy program. I’m asking help especially for the continuity of this initiative thru support materials para makapagbigay-tulong sa ating mga bata,” Dr. Basco said.

The objective of the LODI program is to "continue education at home thru home-school program of the learners"; "develop harmonious relationships of children and parents thru tutorial"; and "enhance basic skills of elementary learners in writing, reading and numeracy skills."
