Mother who went viral for using store’s demo gadget receives own laptop

"Nanay" first caught the internet's attention after netizen Walter So posted a photo of her on Facebook Sunday, using a demo gadget of a tech store in Greenbelt, Makati.

“She can’t afford a gadget to be able to connect with her family and so she [frequently] (goes to) the store, so that she can use the demo MacBook and free internet and chat with her family and check Facebook,” Walter wrote in the caption.

“I’m not sure why her kids would not buy her any gadget, but knowing the motherly value of selflessness, I’m sure she is telling her kids she has all that she needs,” he added.

In an interview with GMA News Online on Monday afternoon, Walter said that Nanay has in fact received her own MacBook Air 2020.

She is currently in the process of setting it up, which shouldn't be too much of hard work for her. In his post, Walter pointed out how tech-savvy Nanay was and said it was all because of the store employees, who were so  accommodating and welcoming to nanay, they taught her how to use the laptop.

“I salute the store employees for being charitable. I hope the returns they get is ten fold. This is now my favorite store,” he wrote.

“Oh... by the way, nanay is amazing at using MacBook. The employees have taught her well,” he added.

Walter stated the importance of technology given the ongoing pandemic and for those who can’t buy gadgets, he praised employees who are kind enough to be of help to others.

“COVID has brought challenges for everyone. Families have not seen each other for the longest time, it’s good that technology enables us to at least virtually keep in touch, at least for those who can afford,” he wrote.

“But for those that can’t, there are people like these employees who give a helping hand. Good job!” He added.

As of writing, the post already reached more than 7,000 reactions and almost 2,000 shares.

“It’s beautiful to see people caring and being touched by this photo , which also symbolizes our Filipino Values of Family, Strong Mothers, Kindness, but also our struggles and hardship,” Walter wrote. — Franchesca Viernes/LA, GMA News
