Delivery rider from Leyte brings joy in Spider-Man costume

Ruel Militante, 42, has not only been delivering food but also bringing joy to his customers in a Spider-Man costume.

As reported by Oscar Oida on “24 Oras” Friday, it began when a customer from Cebu asked him to deliver a birthday cake and serenade their father, who was based in Leyte.

Ruel, who lived in Palo town, said that to add impact, he thought of dressing up as the character Spider-Man.

“Attractive kasi siya, kumbaga headturner. Napapansin ka kaagad,” said the delivery rider. “Kaya naka-come up ako ng idea, since idol ko kasi si Spider-Man.”

Since then, Ruel had become an attraction everywhere he went, and people took his photos and shared them online.

Ruel said that while he didn’t ask for tips, some customers gave him extra money, which ranged from PHP300 to PHP500. “Hindi na masama ’yun,” he said.

His popularity soon inspired other delivery riders in the area to wear their own superhero costumes.

Thankful for the extra income they earn, Ruel and his fellow riders have become superheroes themselves for pooling their money and paying it forward to frontliners, barangay officers, and those who are in need.

“May mga extra kami, inaambag-ambag namin, tapos bibili kami ng tinapay, then kape, ’yun yung pinaka-primary naming na pa-snack sa mga nakaduty na frontliner, tanod,” he said.

For Ruel, the biggest reward in his job is not the money but the happiness he is able to share with others, especially during the pandemic.

“Sa sitwasyon kasi ngayon ng pandemic, marami naman talagang pwedeng maiisip na marangal na (paraan) para kumita, like this,” he said. – RC, GMA News
