5 iconic Gunther moments on ‘Friends’: Fans remember James Michael Tyler

He may not be a main character on "Friends" but James Michael Tyler’s Gunther certainly added a unique dimension to the show and completed the cast.

With his comedic jokes and character, Gunther easily took a huge chunk of any “Friends” fan heart. Which is why news of his death on Monday, just four months after he revealed his three-year battle with stage 4 advanced prostate cancer, was quite a blog.

"Gunther" is among the trending topics on Philippine Twitter all through Monday morning, with fans posting their tributes to the actor, pointing to their favorite Gunther moments on "Friends."

Below are five of his most iconic "Friends" moments that made the 1994 series even more worth watching:

1. The one where Gunther revealed Ross’ xerox girl incident to Rachel

In the Season 3 episode titled “The One With The Morning After,” Ross Geller had just woken up and realized how much of an ass he was when he slept with xerox girl Chloe.

Although he and Rachel Green were “on a break” when that happened, Ross was super guilty when Rachel told him they should work on their relationship.

As such, he did his best to “think about the trail” and told people to please not let Rachel know about the xerox girl. Unfortunately for Ross, it was too late to reach Gunther in Central Perk.

Being the true friend (or devoted lover), Gunther told Rachel about the unfortunate event, resulting in a breakup — and that often quotable "Friends" line, "We were on a break!"

2. The one where Gunther and Phoebe kissed

Amazed with her new-found sexy voice after getting a cold, Phoebe Buffay took the chance and tried being a jazz singer — a career that lasted until she got better.

But Phoebe enjoyed being a jazz singer so much that she went on a mission to purposely get a cold. She did anything and everything she could, just to get that “sexy phlegm.”

Fortunately, for her, Gunther came in the scene, sneezing at Central Perk. Of course, Phoebe wouldn’t let the chance go and immediately planted a kiss on the shocked barista’s lips.

3. The one where he smiled through Ross’ pain

It’s no secret that Gunther had a huge crush on Rachel. So it’s understandable that he hated Ross, Rachel's "lobster," so much.

In Season 9 of “Friends,” Rachel has just given birth to Emma, her child with Ross, and was living with Joey. The two guys encounter a misunderstanding about a proposal and to resolve it, Joey asked Rossa to throw a punch.

But Joey instinctively ducked, so Ross hit a pole at Central Perk instead. Astounded, Joey demonstrates a punch, landing a solid one on Ross' face.

Meanwhile, Gunther was watching behind the counter and without saying a word, made the scene even funnier - by smiling from ear to ear all throughout.

4. The one where Gunther surprised Ross with Dutch

At one point, Ross had to learn Dutch so he could easily get an apartment for Rachel. He lugged a language book with him where he went, including, of course, Central Perk.

Practicing, he thanked Gunther for his coffee in Dutch. To his surprise, the barista answered back like it was a natural for him to speak the language.

Unfortunately, Ross quickly gave up looking for a response, so Gunther called him an ezel or donkey.

Of course, Ross got offended and urged Gunther to take the insult up a notch saying, “Jij hebt seks met ezels,” which translates to: “You have sex with donkeys.”

5. The one where Gunther confesses his feelings to Rachel

It would be unfair if Gunther didn’t confess his feelings to Rachel in the 10-season show. As such, he was finally given a chance in the last episode.

Set at Central Perk, the place where the first met and worked together, Gunther gathered all his guts and whole-heartedly let his feelings out before Rachel leaves for Paris.

“Rachel, I know you're leaving tonight, but I just have to tell you: I love you. I don't know if that changes your plans at all, but I thought you should know,” he said.

To which, she replied: "Probably not in the same way, but I do, too. And when I'm in a cafe, having coffee, or I see a man with hair brighter than the sun, I'll think of you.”

Looking back, that line of Rachel’s may just be the best one to represent “Friends” fans’ feelings now.

Rest in peace, Gunther. Indeed, you are brighter than the sun. — LA, GMA News
