Watch Japanese movies for free at 2014 Eiga Sai filmfest

Movie buffs can catch the best of contemporary Japanese cinema for free beginning Thursday at this year's Eiga Sai film festival.

Ushering in Philippine-Japanese Friendship Month, the filmfest will screen movies at Shang Cineplex Cinema 2 from July 3 to 13, Abreeza Mall in Davao City from July 25 to 27, FDCP Cinematheque also in Davao City from July 29 to August 3, and Ayala Center in Cebu City from August 6 to 10.

This year's slate revolves around the theme of family and surviving natural disasters -- two things that Japan has in common with the Philippines.

"I felt indeed that we, the Japan Foundation, have a lot of things to do to bridge our two countries, which share the tragic history of natural disaster," said Yukie Mitomi, assistant director of the Japan Foundation, Manila (JFM), which organizes the event.

A total of 16 Japanese films will be screened with English subtitles.

The festival will open on Thursday at 7 p.m. with "Homeland" ("Ieji"), a story about a broken family in the throes of the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011.
