The National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA) has ordered the suspension in the construction of the controversial Torre de Manila, which allegedly photobombs the view of Rizal Park.
Senator Pia Cayetano, one of those lobbying against the construction of the building, said the cease and desist order issued by NCCA was served at the project site of Torre de Manila on Tuesday, January 13.
“I welcome the issuance of the Cease and Desist Order (CDO) by the against DMCI’s Torre de Manila condominium project in Manila. The CDO suspends the construction of the 49-storey tower across Rizal Park that has significantly compromised the landscape of the Rizal Monument," Cayetano said in a press statement Wednesday.
She added that it was high time that the people take the protection of the country's history, culture, and heritage more seriously, as these make up the intangible ideals that bind Filipinos and define its national identity.
“I fully support the NCCA in asserting its mandate to safeguard our heritage. The Rizal Shrine, as a national monument, is entitled to full protection under our national heritage law, whose objective is to preserve and protect important cultural properties and national cultural treasures and to safeguard their intrinsic value within their historical setting, and that includes their vistas and visual corridors," she added.
The senator said it is not too late to rectify the lapses that led to the construction of the Torre de Manila skyscraper that has now marred the sightline of the historic Rizal Shrine.
"I believe the CDO is a step in the right direction towards correcting those mistakes and putting things back in order," she said.
The order, signed by NCCA chairman Felipe de Leon and dated January 5, 2015, states that DMCI Homes should cease and desist from the constructing the condominium until such time that the commission can make a declaration if there is an actual destruction and if such merits a permanent cease and desist order. — VC, GMA News
