Sine Mabuhay Club to screen eight PHL indie films

Sine Mabuhay Club is making eight Philippine independent films available to the general public for the first quarter of this year, including entries from previous Cinemalaya Film Festivals such as "K'na the Dreamweaver," "Mariquina," and "The Janitor," among others.

Writers and directors Nestor Torre, Doy Del Mundo, and Albert Almendralejo teamed up with Mabuhay Restop to form Sine Mabuhay Club (SMC) and promote Philippine independent films by providing easy and regular access to the general public in selected locations, as well as by encouraging Filipino artistic expression through film and helping the public gain a greater appreciation of Filipino artistry.

In line with the organization's mission, SMC recently conducted The Film Appreciation Workshop last January 31 to jumpstart the activities. This month, the screening of films started on Valentine's Day with Cinemalaya 2014 entry "K'Na the Dreamweaver" from Ida Anita Q. Del Mundo, followed by "Boses" by Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil on February 21.

The first quarter of screening will continue until May 2015 with the following Philippine independent films:

  • Little Azkals - March 7, 2 to 5 p.m.
  • Mariquina - March 21, 2 to 5 p.m.
  • Pepot Artista - April 11, 2 to 5 p.m.
  • Bakal Boys - April 25, 2 to 5 p.m.
  • The Janitor - May 9. 2 to 5 p.m.
  • Tubang Preso - May 23, 2 to 5 p.m.

Aside from screening, there will also be a meet-and-greet with the filmmaker, cast, and crew of each film.

The films can be viewed for a fee of P150 at Mabuhay Restop at South Drive, Ermita, Manila, and related partners such as the new COMET e-jeeps that are currently plying the SM-North to Katipunan route via Luzon Avenue.

Members of the Sine Mabuhay Club who are also aspiring filmmakes may submit their short films for showing at the same venue.  Bianca Rose Dabu/VC, GMA News
