At Met Gala 2016, Emma Watson wears gown made of yarn from plastic bottles

Aside from starring in several blockbuster films, most notably in the Harry Potter series as Hermione Granger, award-winning actress and activist Emma Watson has also been among celebrities who use their fame to push forward their humanitarian and environmental advocacies.

Watson became a United Nations Women global ambassador and launched the "HeForShe" campaign for gender equality

Now she's taking a step towards fashion revolution.

The actress recently participated in The Green Carpet Challenge, a movement “that works with stars and iconic designers to promote sustainable style on the red carpet.”

She has used sustainable clothing all throughout the press tour for the Canadian-Spanish-American psychological thriller horror film “Regression” last year, and now, she's bringing the trend to Hollywood's red carpet.

The British actress, model, and activist attended the Met Gala 2016 in New York City on Monday proudly wearing a Calvin Klein-Eco-Age gown, which was “crafted from three different fabrics, all woven from yarns made from recycled plastic bottles.”

“I am proud to say (the gown) is truly sustainable and represents a connection between myself and all the people in the supply chain who played a role in creating it," Watson said in a Facebook post.

“Plastic is one of the biggest pollutants on the planet. Being able to repurpose this waste and incorporate it into my gown for the #‎MetGala proves the power that creativity, technology and fashion can have by working together,” she added.

Watson put the spotlight on sustainability while attending one of the most star-studded events with the theme “Fashion in an Age of Technology.”

“Each and every part of this beautiful gown has been produced with sustainability in mind, even the components that you can’t see. The zippers on the gown are made from recycled materials and the inner bustier has been crafted from organic cotton,” Watson said.

“Conventional cotton is one of the highest impact crops, using more chemicals than any other crop in the world. Organic cotton on the other hand, is grown without the use of the most harmful chemicals and is therefore better for the environment and people working with cotton. The organic silk used in the lining of my gown is certified to a standard that guarantees the highest environmental and social standards throughout production,” the actress and activist added.

She has also expressed the intention to repurpose the elements of the gown for future use, including the trousers, the bustier, and the train.

After all, “truly beautiful things should be worn again and again and again.”

“It is my intention to repurpose elements of the gown for future use. The trousers can be worn on their own, as can the bustier, the train can be used for a future red carpet look… I’m looking forward to experimenting with this. Truly beautiful things should be worn again and again and again. #‎30wears I hope you like it! The ultimate #30Wears! #‎MetGala2016” Watson said.

Several Hollywood actresses also joined the Green Carpet Challenge, including “Suicide Squad” star Margot Robbie and Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o, as well as American actress Cameron Diaz and “The Huntsman: Winter's War” star Emily Blunt.

“Calvin Klein were delighted to accept the challenge and worked closely with Eco-Age to make all looks for The Met Gala as sustainable as possible, reflecting the ethos of the GCC and celebrating the theme,” according to Eco Age.

They added, “Who said sustainable fashion isn’t glamourous? @CameronDiaz and #EmilyBlunt rocking the #MetGala #GreenCarpetChallenge in @stellamccartney and @houseofherrera.”
