The week-long The Manila Composers Lab: Southeast Asian Young Composers Workshop and Competition will begin on Friday at the University of the Philippines' College of Music in Diliman, Quezon City.
The event allows young composers from the region to meet distinguished members of the industry, from German composer Johannes Schöllhorn to Dr. Jonas Baes of the UP College of Music, Chong Kee Yong of Malaysia, Michael Asmara of Indonesia, Anothai Nitibhon of Thailand, Kim Ngoc Tran of Vietnam, and Hoh Chung Shih of Singapore. A composer and professor at the University of Music and Dance in Cologne, Schöllhorn will attend the conference on the invitation of Goethe-Institut, the German cultural center said in a statement.

The event, organized by the College, aims to create performing and learning opportunities for the young performers and build a community of regional composers and musicians.
On July 21, the last day of the event, the participants' works will be performed at a concert at the Abelardo Hall Auditorium by the Ripieno Ensemble. One of the participants will also be awarded a musical grant. — BM, GMA News
