Canadian foundation, designers create funky hospital gowns for teens

With any luck, a majority of the population won't have to experience sleeping in a hospital gown or wearing it for a prolonged period in our lives. In a video shared by the Starlight Children's Foundation from Canada, teens who wake up daily wearing the garment share its effects on their mood.

"It sort of makes me feel like my identity has been stripped from me," one teenager stated. Most of them had similar feelings. The gown is a reminder of their disease and confinement.

Another teen adds, "When you can't wear what you want you feel like you're not who you should be or you're just your illness or you're just a hospital patient."

This inspired Starlight to reach out to six designers to launch Ward + Robes, a collaborative effort to rethink the hospital gown.

Among those tapped for the project is Izzy Camilleri, who has worked with David Bowie, Meryl Streep, Angelina Jolie, and Jennifer Lopez. Camilleri also works as a designer for the IZ Collection, a fashion brand that specifically caters to wheelchair users.

Fellow designer Rebecca Nixon took to Instagram to share her enthusiasm for the project.

Starlight specified to the designers that comfort should still take precedence even as they add a little flair to the hospital gown. Fundraisers are being held to continue the project and help Ward + Robes reach more teens. — Aya Tantiangco/BM, GMA News
