Movies to stream online on rainy days

There are a lot of cons to the torrential downpour in the city—traffic, flooding, an itch to reconnect with your ex—but hooray for not feeling bad about staying in and spending some time at home, especially in the age of online streaming services.

In the event that the power doesn't go out and the internet connection is stable, a night in by yourself or with friends is a great way to fight the blues that seem to come with the rain.

The selection can be overwhelming, so here's a couple of suggestions. Happy watching!

"Hush" (2016)

On Netflix, 87 minutes

You're home alone and so is the character in this movie. She's deaf and while she's trying to get some work done, her home gets invaded. Fortunately, she's up for a fight and she's ready to do what it takes to outwit the psychotic, sadistic man who really should consider a new hobby.

Also on Netflix: "The Conjuring"

"What's Your Number" (2011)

On Netflix, 106 minutes

In the mood for a little romantic comedy? "What's Your Number" may not have been a box office hit nor did it wow the critics, but it's Anna Faris and Chris Evans being equally adorable—plus a bonus Chris Pratt appearance before he was Chris Pratt! Faris plays the role of Ally Darling, who is worried about the number of bed partners she's had and she decides to figure out a way to get to the fabled happily ever after without raising it. It's funny, light, sweet, and illustrates the craziness of standards imposed on both men and women without being preachy about it. A happy watch on a gloomy day!

Also on Netflix: "Morning Glory" and "The Fundamentals of Caring"

"Ekstra" (2013)

On iFlix, 113 minutes

Take full advantage of iFlix's selection of independent movies, which includes a number of Cinemalaya Film Festival winners like the Vilma Santos starrer "Ekstra." Santos plays Loida Malabanan, the titular bit player whose day on set gives the audience a peek into the stressful world of creating a TV episode. Loida's humble aspirations of finally landing a speaking part also gives a glimpse into the simple joys that seem impossible at times. It goes without saying that Ate Vi is superb in the movie.

Also on iFlix: "Engkwento" and "Dagitab"

"John Dies at the End" (2012)

On iFlix, 99 minutes

We can't tell you if John actually dies at the end, but we can tell you that this is a fun movie that has a witty (it opens with a brain teaser) and juvenile (there's a door knob that turns into a dick) appeal. It revolves around, of all things, a mystical soy sauce and a bit of alien invasion. Perfect for a day-in with friends.

Also on iFlix: "It Follows"

"Toro (Live Show)" (2000)

On Hooq, 110 minutes

A movie that was so, shall we say, "steamy" that it was banned from theaters in the Philippines. There's a whole lot of nudity and risque scenes, a nod to local cinema's long history of bomba films that sneak in social commentary. Beyond the famous "helicopter" scene, the movie deals with the depths that people get plunged into as their options for a more dignified lifestyle disappear. "Toro" was nominated for several Gawad Urian awards—including Best Picture—and screened in the Berlin Film Festival (among others), where it was praised for its blunt depiction of life in the slums.

Also on Hooq: "Metro Manila" and "City After Dark"

"Temptation Island" (1980)

On Hooq, 115 minutes

The ice cream in the middle of the dessert scene just got its sculpture in Ilocos and if you haven't seen the "bitches at the beach," then now is the time to find out why this film is a treasure.

Also on Hooq: The 2011 remake and "Shake, Rattle, and Roll" starting from III
