Marvel and Disney launching new Spider-Man animated series in 2017
Looks like the House of Mouse and the House of Ideas are teaming up again to reboot the small-screen adventures of a certain friendly neighborhood wallcrawler in 2017: Marvel and Disney announced at this year’s New York Comic Con that they are launching a new animated series next year called “Marvel’s Spider-Man” on Disney XD.
According to USA Today, the new show will replace the ongoing “Ultimate Spider-Man” TV series, which depicts Spidey working with SHIELD and will wrap up its run in January.
According to story editor Kevin Shinick, “Marvel’s Spider-Man” will take the wallcrawler back to his roots and show him as struggling to balance his responsibilities as a high schooler and full-time superhero. The reboot will obviously capitalize on the next year’s release of “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” starring Tom Holland, who debuted in the role in this year’s “Captain America: Civil War” alongside Team Iron Man.
“We’ve been secretly nurturing ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man’ for years now, so we are thrilled to finally announce it,” said Marvel Animation and Family Entertainment senior vice president Cort Lane. “The simple title reflects a back to basics approach—the story of an ordinary teen, Peter Parker, who suddenly finds himself with strange new powers and overwhelming responsibility.”
“Ultimate Spider-Man” will wrap up its fourth and final season early next year. In the show, Peter will team up with fellow arachnids from the Spider-Verse like Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen and his superhero friends Nova, White Tiger, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage against the likes of Doctor Octopus and the Sinister Six as the show begins winding down to its finale.
There’s no word yet on when “Marvel’s Spider-Man” will debut on Disney XD, but it’s a good bet the show will come before or after “Spider-Man: Homecoming” hits theaters on July 7, 2017. — BM, GMA News
