In Germany, ‘Perchten’ monsters ward off darkness for Christmas

In the Bavarian town of Kirchseeon, locals have been busy preparing for Christmas—by taking part in a traditional parade dressed as terrifying monsters.

"Perchten" processions are traditionally held between December 21 and January 6, the shortest and darkest days of the year.

The "Perchten" monsters—followers of pagan goddess of the beasts Perchta—march, sing and dance to ward off the darkness and call nature back to life.

Perchten parades are still held every year in the Alps, in southern Germany and Austria.
