Christmas light and sound show at BGC a model of ‘intelligent’ lighting

The dazzling light show at Bonifacio High Street in Bonifacio Global City is a full five minutes of lights dimming and brightening in synch with the classic Christmas tune "Carol of the Bells."

It's the creation of veteran light designer Shakira Villa Symes, and it makes full use of automated lights and LED Christmas lights—a change, says Symes, from the usual Christmas light show that uses static LED Christmas lights and only a few automated lights as accents. For the central Christmas tree, the designer said, "automated lights shoots off a plethora of colors as well as an abstract star above the tree."

It took Symes and light supplier Forsc Ink three nights to install the set-up in the Bonifacio High Street park, programming lights and time-coding them to the music in the wee hours of the morning.

The light show was unveiled two weeks ago, with the Manila Symphony Orchestra performing the music.

The light show currently happens every 30 minutes in the evenings and will run until December 28.

Symes, a Fine Arts and Theater Arts graduate from the University of the Philippines who began designing lighting professionally in 1991, said she had wanted her creation to elicit an "orgasmic" reaction—that by the time the music ends, the audience would be left breathless and say 'Hey, can you do that again?' I hope I'm able to give that kind of reaction." — BM, GMA News
