Jason Segel, Rooney Mara face the afterlife in Netflix’s ‘The Discovery’

In the new Netflix romantic science fiction movie “The Discovery,” the afterlife has been scientifically proven to exist.

This discovery, however, has unexpected (or perhaps expected) repercussions on the world. Eager to see what this afterlife is all about, vast numbers of people decide to prematurely end their lives.

“The Discovery” is set a year after scientist Thomas Harbor (Robert Redford) proves that the afterlife—or as he likes to call it, “a new plane of existence”—is real. At this point, over a million people are already dead by suicide, and the numbers are still rising.

The movie revolves around Harbor’s son, Will (played by Jason Segel), and a woman named Isla (Rooney Mara), with whom he falls in love. Together, they must navigate treacherous waters as they try to come “to terms with their own tragic pasts and the true nature of the afterlife.”

Segel is a comedian best known for his “How I Met Your Mother” role, and his roles in movies such as “I Love You Man,” “The Muppets,” and “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” Mara played the lead in “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” She was recently embroiled in a whitewashing controversy for playing a white Tiger Lily in “Pan.”

Robert Redford has starred in numerous successful films such as “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and “All the President’s Men.” He is the president and founder of the Sundance Institute.

“The Discovery” was directed by “The One I Love” and “Silicon Valley” director Charlie McDowell. It made its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2017. Its Netflix premiere happens this March 31. — BM, GMA News
