From ‘Hidden Figures’ to action figures: Lego launches ‘Women of NASA’

"Hidden Figures" failed to bag a gold statue at the 89th Academy Awards on Sunday, but they're getting something more awesome.

Coinciding with Women's Month, Lego on Wednesday launched its "Women of NASA" series and among the lineup is Katherine Johnson, the math genius featured in the Oscar-nominated film.

The toys immediately got the seal of approval of George Takei, who played Sulu in the landmark science fiction program Star Trek.

In the video announcement, Lego spokesperson Lise Dydensborg said, "As a science editor and writer, with a strong personal interest for space exploration as well as the history of women in science and engineering, Maia Weinstock’s Women of Nasa project was a way for her to celebrate accomplished women in the Stem professions."

The idea was pitched by Maia Weinstock, who made also made a fan model of Margaret Hamilton, Sally Ride, Nancy Grace Roman, and Mae Jemison. The project received 10,000 votes.

Hamilton's photo as a young woman standing next to a stack of paper—the code that got people to the moon—is now instantly recognizable as it has gone viral on social media.

Ride, as many would know, is the first woman in space and Jemison is the first African-American to travel in space. Nancy Grace Roman is one of the first NASA executives. — Aya Tantiangco/BM, GMA News
