Netflix’s Iron Fist will be a costume-less crimefighter

Like almost every superhero, Danny Rand a.k.a. Iron Fist wears a costume in the comic books. But everyone has to start small; even billionaire Bruce Wayne didn’t parade around Gotham as a giant bat in his first stint as a crimefighter.

It seems Netflix’s “Marvel’s Iron Fist” will be going a similar route, as titular hero Danny Rand (Finn Jones) won’t be donning his green and yellow superhero outfit in the show’s first season.

“There was no good reason we could imagine to put Danny Rand in a costume,” GamesRadar quoted series showrunner Scott Buck in his interview with SFX Magazine. “Because Danny Rand is still discovering who he is as a hero and where he is going to be, so he’s not yet ready to put on a mask or a costume.”

Having no disguise, however, can put Danny Rand, and those closest to him, at risk. So, at some point in the show, the notion of putting on a mask might become a real consideration for the superhero-in-the-making.

“[A]t the same time he is someone who is rather well known as a billionaire, so he can’t necessarily go out in public and do the things he does without being recognized,” stated Scott Buck. “It does become an issue for the character.”

Scott Buck said that the live-action Iron Fist will still incorporate his comic book incarnation’s mystical aspects. As the Netflix shows tend to skew towards realism, however, expect the mysticism to take a back seat to believable storytelling and characters.

“We’re trying to keep things extremely grounded and real and tell our stories through characters,” he said. “So the mystical aspect is something we like to hint at, the idea that there is something bigger and larger out there, but we don’t delve into it all that deeply.”

Iron Fist’s journey will likely parallel fellow Netflix  Defender Daredevil’s. In the first season of “Marvel’s Daredevil,” Matt Murdock only put on his iconic devil costume in the final few seconds of the last episode as a teaser of what was to come in season 2.

In addition to Finn Jones, “Marvel’s Iron Fist” stars Jessica Henwick (Colleen Wing), David Wenham (Harold Meachum), Jessica Stroup (Joy Meachum), and Tom Pelphrey (Ward Meachum). The show will also see Rosario Dawson and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their roles as Claire Temple and Jeri Hogarth, respectively.

“Marvel’s Iron Fist” will consist of 13 episodes. It premieres on March 17, 2017. — BM, GMA News
