Colleen Wing spotlighted in Netflix’s ‘Iron Fist’ featurette
There’s a new “Marvel’s Iron Fist” trailer, and it doesn’t focus on Danny Rand for a change. Instead, it spotlights Colleen Wing, a badass martial artist who becomes Iron Fist’s ally… and perhaps something more.
Yep! There’s romance in the air! Because nothing gets those hormones worked up quite like being chased by murderous ninjas. Let’s just hope this doesn’t fall under the Asian Gal With White Guy trope. The show is already embroiled in enough controversy as it is.
Colleen Wing is played by Jessica Henwick, who was also Nymeria Sand, one of the Sand Snakes, in “Game of Thrones.” Colleen uses her position as the owner of a martial arts dojo to help kids deal with the real world. She also happens to enjoy beating people up in fight clubs.
In the comics, Colleen fights crime alongside Misty Knight as the Daughters of the Dragon. They occasionally team up with Heroes for Hire, a superhero group led by Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
Those who’ve watched Netflix’s “Marvel’s Luke Cage” are already aware that Misty Knight also exists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so Colleen and Misty working together in the future is a possibility.
Early reviews of the first six episodes of “Marvel’s Iron Fist” have been discouraging, with critics complaining about the show’s slow and soap opera-style drama. As of writing, it is the lowest-rated of the Netflix Marvel shows on Metacritic.
While Danny Rand/Iron Fist (Finn Jones) has so far failed to impress critics, the reactions to Colleen Wing and Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson) have been extremely positive. In fact, critics even cite Colleen as a more convincing fighter than Danny. Perhaps this is the reason why Netflix and Marvel released this Colleen-centric featurette?
At any rate, we’ll all be able to judge “Marvel’s Iron Fist” for ourselves when it premieres this March 17. — BM, GMA News
