‘Beauty and the Beast’ in 4DX with rain and snow effects: Is it worth it?
Fans know every line of the song, every problematic part of the story, and the happily-ever-after ending...but everyone's still rushing to see "Beauty and the Beast." Maybe we just all need a distraction?
In any case, the movie actually offers a few upgrades that address the criticism in the original animated classic from 1991. We won't spoil it for you, but a few tips: mind your expectations about the supposed gay scenes in the film...and sorry, Belle is still unnecessary critical of the baker. (He makes food, Belle. Food is a basic need.)
The film has a built-in charm for its fans and the tweaks are sure to appeal to those already under its spell, but there's one more way to experience "Beauty and the Beast"—it's showing in 4DX at Central Square and they're advertising the new snow and rain effects.
If you've been around real snow, it's underwhelming if you're seated near the back. The spray of snow is nearer the screen and mostly on the side—hard to notice if you're focusing on the movie (which is in 3D and is already showing you falling snow).
Additionally, if you're expecting the lovely 0-degree (or lower) weather that comes with snowfall, you need to buy a ticket to Korea or Japan and not a ticket to this movie.
The gusts of wind, sprayed from the seat in front of you, are mildly refreshing and so is the gentle scent of roses in key scenes. The spray of water to the face, however, is a little jolting and inconvenient because you're wearing 3D glasses. You'll be forced to take off the glasses and wipe it, which means you miss a few things onscreen.
If you enjoy getting a strong spray of water on your face without warning though, this is perfect! There are no judgements here, just warnings.
The moving seats, already a feature of the cinema, seem a little odd in a movie that doesn't really involve action. It makes sense for horse-riding scenes, sure, but some might find the motion odd when paired with a dancing sequence.
That's not to say it's not enjoyable, because it's really fun. Those who enjoy rocking chairs, hammocks, or being on a small boat will find the motion very soothing. However, if you enjoy staying still and letting the action happen onscreen, you should know that "Beauty and the Beast" in 4DX will feel like an amusement ride.
In line with Belle actress Emma Watson's feminism, take advantage of your freedom to watch this film however you like. Seeing this movie in 4DX is ultimately your choice.
All we can offer is advice—bring something with which to wipe your face and glasses (wear waterproof makeup?) and get a seat closer to the screen, perhaps on the side, if you want to experience the snow effect in full. — BM, GMA News
