Hear Tom Cruise scream again in new ‘The Mummy’ trailer

You can’t run…you can’t escape… from Tom Cruise’s screaming.

Well, to be honest, Universal Pictures’ new trailer for its upcoming film “The Mummy” has less of Tom Cruise’s shrill screams, but it does feature more of him giving us his best “I’m paying attention but I’m really confused” face.

We also see him doing death-defying stunts like running and leaping a foot or a foot-and-a-half into the air.

In addition, this video makes it clear that we have a new trend when it comes to the music used in trailers. Dull and dreary renditions of cheerful songs? How dated. Trailers today are all about classic rock songs! “Suicide Squad” famously gave us Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”; “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” blared Led Zeppelin’s “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You”; “Kong Skull Island” roared The Animals’ “We Gotta Get Out Of This Place.” And now we have “The Mummy” blasting The Rolling Stones’ epic “Paint it Black.”

In the movie, Tom Cruise plays Nick Morton, an action superstar who accidentally discovers an ancient tomb. That tomb belongs to Princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella), a magical Egyptian princess with really cute eyebrows, but who also happens to be super evil. She then brings about what looks like the Apocalypse, because that’s what all major movie bad guys do.

“From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters,” states the movie’s official synopsis.

“The Mummy” is directed and co-produced by Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote 2007’s “Transformers,” 2009’s “Watchmen,” “Star Trek,” and “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” and co-wrote and produced 2013’s “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

“The Mummy” is a reboot of Universal’s “The Mummy” franchise. The late ‘90s and early to late 2000s gave us a trilogy starring Brendan Fraser. He plays as Richard “Rick” O’Connell, an Indiana Jones-esque figure who thwarts ancient evils Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) in the first two films, and Emperor Han (Jet Li) in the third film. Rick is joined by Evelyn “Evie” Carnahan (Rachel Weisz, then Maria Bello), an intelligent Egyptologist who goes from clumsy damsel in distress to butt-kicking reincarnation of an Egyptian princess in the films. The trilogy also gave birth to “The Scorpion King” spin-off movie starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, which then morphed into an embarrassing direct-to-video film series.

With the new “The Mummy” movie, Universal aims to kick-start its Universal Monsters shared universe, which might eventually incorporate classic monsters such as Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Wolfman into the mix.
